A “Wild Scene of Crag and Mountain”

Our road trip on Sunday from the Cotswolds to Edinburgh took us through western England and the Lake District.

The drive was fantastic; the landscape transformed dramatically from the pastoral Cotswolds we left behind, to more windswept hills…

Here 14 lakes–among them Windermere, England’s largest–radiate from a hub of ragged, glacier-carved mountains (or fells) that include, at just above 3,000 feet, the country’s highest peaks. William Wordsworth, The Lakes’ most famous and influential native son (his poems include “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud“), aptly described it as a “wild scene of crag and mountain.” Now we see why this area is a favorite of Brits and visitors alike.
