Murren Transformed

We got back to Murren last night around 6 and this sleepy little car-free town of 350 where we ended our hiking last Tuesday had transformed into a hopping festival atmosphere with music and tents and people cheering.

But to start, it`s an interesting trip from Thun to Murren: 35 minute train to Interlaken, 8 minutes to make the connection; 20 minute train to Lauterbrunnen; 3 minutes to make the next connection; 3 minute cable car ride up to the Lauterbrunnen Station ( about 2500 feet above Lauterbrunnen?); 20 minute train to Murren.

Town was hopping as the Murren Schilthorn INFERNO race was finishing. You have your choice of a triathlon, a half-marathon (halbmarathon in German), a team triathlon, or the Murren fun triathlon. What we did by train and cable car from Thun was covered by the triathletes, plus much more, in (for last year`s winners) 9-11 hours. They swam 3.1 km in Lake Thun from Thun to Oberhofen, road biked 97 km and 2145 m of elevation along the north side of both lakes (Thun and Brienz), through the valley and up to Grindelwald, mountain biked 30 km and 1180 m of elevation from there to Stechelberg and then ran 25km up to Schilthorn Piz Gloria, 2175m UP!!! Wow. Impressive. I guess we can hike 17 km and 1300 m up and down!
