Day 5 on Kilimanjaro

Summit Eve! Today we would hike across the ‘Saddle’ between Mawenzi Peak and Kibo, reaching our highest altitude yet, 15,180′.

The good news this morning was that Mark was feeling better. The bad news: Will hardly slept at all (a symptom of altitude sickness). It was a cloudy day, so no great views, and it was cool, but not freezing.

Sad.... a small plane clipped Mawenzi and crashed into the Saddle in 2008. It was a bit eerie.

Hiking across the Saddle from Mawenzi to Kibo. The landscape is a bleak as it looks. "Moonscape" comes to mind.

We skipped teatime, and had an early dinner at 5ish. The advice for tonight was to sleep in everything we would wear to the summit tomorrow, except our shoes, gortex outer layer, and headwear. By the time we retired for the evening around 7, it was darn cold, and I, for one, wore all my headwear!

Nighttime - BRRRRRR! But one happy camper!
