The Italian and French Rivieras

We were actually supposed to stop at Palamos, Spain rather than Sète, France prior to our last stop in Barcelona. But unrest and strikes due to the Catalonian Independence movement meant we diverted last minute to this sleepy little French town. Better sleepy than angry! Luckily, all was calm and gorgeous upon arrival in our last stop, Barcelona.

Sailing the Leeward Islands

Well… mostly the Leeward Islands. In April, we sailed for 3 weeks from St. Martin to St. Lucia. As you can see on the map below, St. Martin south to Dominica lies in the Leeward Islands, while our last two stops, Martinique and St. Lucia, are in the Windward Islands. We started on St. Martin, which is what the island itself is called. The island is divided roughly 60/40 between the Collectivité de Saint-Martin, an overseas collectivity of France, and Sint Maarten, one of four constituent countries that form the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The four parts of the Kingdom (Aruba, Curaçao, […]

Méribel – Heart of Les 3 Vallées

Our second week in the French Alps was spent in Méribel in the heart of Les 3 Vallées. Our hotel, Alpen Ruitor, was situated in the small village of Méribel Mottaret, just up the valley from Méribel, with 3 lifts right out our back door. With 2 lift rides, we could ski Courchevel, Méribel, or Val Thorens. Every year, a group of friends, colleagues and former colleagues from Milliman meets up for a few days of skiing somewhere in the US or Canada. This year, the group fulfilled a long-time bucket list wish of taking the trip to Europe. We […]

Les 3 Vallées – Courchevel

We spent our first week of skiing in Europe in Courchevel 1850, the main resort town of one of the three valleys in the Les 3 Vallées ski area in the French Alps. You can find it on the left-hand side of the ski run map below. Les 3 Vallées comprise the resorts of Courchevel, La Tania, Méribel, Brides-les-Bains, Les Menuires – Saint Martin, Val Thorens and Orelle, each with multiple villages. It is the world’s largest ski area linked together by ski runs and ski lifts, with 600 kms of interconnected slopes and 180 ski lifts. We skied a […]

Modern Art at Centre Pompidou, Paris

We made a quick 3 day stop in Paris on our way to the Alps for our first try at skiing in Europe (pics coming soon). We visited a couple of our favorite places (we’ve eaten at La Rôtisserie d’en Face every time we’ve come to Paris since our honeymoon in 2001, always good food and such sentimental memories for us; and I love the silky camisoles at Bruce Field on Saint Germain). We also visited a couple of new places (one new and one not, but both new for us): Musée National d’Art Moderne at Centre Pompidou, and the newly opened […]
