“Stranded” in Zermatt, Switzerland

“13,000 Tourists Stranded in a Swiss Ski Resort for 2 Days” “Tourists airlifted out of Swiss ski resort of Zermatt” These are the headlines we woke up to in Zermatt, Switzerland last week, along with emails and Facebook messages from friends asking if we were okay. Zermatt is a beautiful village tucked at the end of a box canyon in the Swiss Alps beneath […]

Zermatt, one of our all-time favorites

The last stop on our Ski Europe adventure was Zermatt, Switzerland. Zermatt has been one of our all-time favorite places in both summer and fall; our first winter visit only deepened our love of this place. Dominated by the gracefully curved pyramid of the Matterhorn rising in its background, Zermatt has unsurpassed natural beauty combined with a charming, welcoming, and very special village. That also meant that there should be some trails for snowshoeing (as these are often hiking trails in the summer), and […]

September Showers lead to…. Les Trois Vallees

After 4 weeks of almost continuous sunshine in the Alps, this weekend brought thunderstorms to the Val d’Anniviers and the Turtman valley, our from/to points. The Forcletta pass we were to cross is high and steep, and freezing temps were forecast. Hmmm… what to do… our last two days of hiking… Our new good friends, Margaret and Ron, served as our inspiration for skipping out. They had already made alternate plans for train ride to Domodossola, IT and on to Zermatt. That, combined with the fact that we had just finalized our Vail Epic passes a few days earlier, gave […]
