We Love Cape Town!

We’ve been so delighted to return to the many wonders of Cape Town. Along with Sydney and Paris, it ranks as a favorite city of ours. Mountains, ocean, beaches, and vineyards; fascinating history and cosmopolitan, happening vibe … we highly recommend this fabulous destination to anyone. Oh, and $1US buys almost 15 South African Rand, making it so affordable just now! Our besties, Will and Brandy Taylor, owners of Khashana Adventure Travel, will be basing out of Cape Town for much of the next year. Will’s mom, Val, lives on Woodbridge Island, just minutes from downtown Cape Town. To be […] Read more

The Dunes of Namibia

We’re spending April in Africa, our 3rd visit to the continent. We’re excited to visit 3 places we haven’t been before – Namibia, the Seychelles and Angama Mara lodge in Kenya –  plus spend some more time exploring Cape Town. We flew Qatar Airlines for the first time, with a connection through the capital city Doha. We were quite impressed with the airline, the airport lounge in Doha – great shower facilities, surprisingly good Indian/Middle Eastern cuisine in the restaurant, plus private, quiet sleeping ‘pods’ – and especially their roomy new 787 Dreamliner from Doha to Cape Town. We highly […] Read more

Hiking to Boiling Lake on Dominica

The highlight of our stay in Dominica last April was the  hike to Boiling Lake. This hike is a must for any serious hiker visiting Dominica. Boiling Lake could arguably be one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, and getting there (and down) made for a gorgeous, adventuresome, arduous day filled with hot clay/pumice facials, hot spring soaks, freshly boiled eggs – in the hot spring river! – and waterfalls galore. There’s so much more to explore on Dominica, we’ll definitely be back. For example, Dominica is home to the Caribbean’s first long distance trail, the Waitukubuli National […] Read more

Sailing the Leeward Islands

Well… mostly the Leeward Islands. In April, we sailed for 3 weeks from St. Martin to St. Lucia. As you can see on the map below, St. Martin south to Dominica lies in the Leeward Islands, while our last two stops, Martinique and St. Lucia, are in the Windward Islands. We started on St. Martin, which is what the island itself is called. The island is divided roughly 60/40 between the Collectivité de Saint-Martin, an overseas collectivity of France, and Sint Maarten, one of four constituent countries that form the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The four parts of the Kingdom (Aruba, Curaçao, […] Read more

Zermatt, one of our all-time favorites

The last stop on our Ski Europe adventure was Zermatt, Switzerland. Zermatt has been one of our all-time favorite places in both summer and fall; our first winter visit only deepened our love of this place. Dominated by the gracefully curved pyramid of the Matterhorn rising in its background, Zermatt has unsurpassed natural beauty combined with a charming, welcoming, and very special village. What makes it so special? First, you can’t actually drive to Zermatt (though we did once try to, in confusion, several years ago…). Zermatt is car-free (except for local electric taxis), lending to a quaint and romantic village, where walking […] Read more
