Verbier and Engelberg in the Swiss Alps

Next up on our Ski Europe adventure…Verbier and Engelberg in the Swiss Alps. First, we drove from Les Trois Vallées to Verbier, Switzerland. We chose Verbier for a couple of reasons. 1) Like Les Trois Vallées, Verbier is covered for 5 days of skiing by Vail’s Epic Pass. 2) We had hiked in the Verbier area on the 3rd leg – the Haute Route – of our month of hiking in Switzerland in 2013, and thought it was beautiful. That also meant that there should be some trails for snowshoeing (as these are often hiking trails in the summer), and […]

Méribel – Heart of Les 3 Vallées

Our second week in the French Alps was spent in Méribel in the heart of Les 3 Vallées. Our hotel, Alpen Ruitor, was situated in the small village of Méribel Mottaret, just up the valley from Méribel, with 3 lifts right out our back door. With 2 lift rides, we could ski Courchevel, Méribel, or Val Thorens. Every year, a group of friends, colleagues and former colleagues from Milliman meets up for a few days of skiing somewhere in the US or Canada. This year, the group fulfilled a long-time bucket list wish of taking the trip to Europe. We […]

Les 3 Vallées – Courchevel

We spent our first week of skiing in Europe in Courchevel 1850, the main resort town of one of the three valleys in the Les 3 Vallées ski area in the French Alps. You can find it on the left-hand side of the ski run map below. Les 3 Vallées comprise the resorts of Courchevel, La Tania, Méribel, Brides-les-Bains, Les Menuires – Saint Martin, Val Thorens and Orelle, each with multiple villages. It is the world’s largest ski area linked together by ski runs and ski lifts, with 600 kms of interconnected slopes and 180 ski lifts. We skied a […]

Vive le Tour de France

“But every July the world knows that a struggle of epic proportions will occur and the man who emerges victor will have achieved true lasting fame and glory…. it is a marvelous gigantic event that has time to develop like a giant novel… a race of unbelievable difficulty with a gloriously rich history.” The Story of the Tour de France by Bill and Carol McGann Watching all of France galvanize around the TDF has been more moving and special than we ever could have imagined. From the spectacle of the publicity caravan to the RVers and picnickers lining the roads to the […]

Bonjour! From Le Tour de France 2014

“I was joined by Jen, an ex-pro who works with Bikestyle Tours, for the last few switchbacks and was barely able to make conversation. To give you an idea about relative effort, while I slipped quietly into my pain cave she was on the internet on her phone, looking up CyclingTips. I shit you not. Not long after she disappeared into the distance.”   Matt McCullough, reporting for CyclingTips.com.au. This pretty much wraps up the first climb on our Tour de France bike trip with Bikestyle Tours, and we were much further back in the pack than Matt. What were […]
