Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, is by far the largest city at about 100,000 people. It is home to the Royal family, the parliament, international aid organizations, the Bhutan Eleven (national soccer team), a growing business community, and Bhutan’s film industry. We happened to meet Tshewang Dendup on the street in Thimphu. He was the star of Travellers & Magicians, an excellent 2003 film we watched in preparation for our trip. Hiking Around Mt Fuji with Mountain Trek

We’ve spent the past week in the company of 6 other intrepid trekkers hiking around Mt Fuji with Mountain Trek guides Ted Taylor and Kirkland Shave. Mountain Trek is a hiking and health spa retreat just outside of Nelson, British Columbia where we’ve enjoyed some fantastic hiking in the past. Making Sense of Shinto and Buddhism in Japan is Confucing

According to one source, 90% of the Japanese say they practice Shinto, 90% say they practice Buddhism, and 90% say they aren’t religious. Other sources dispute this, attributing statistics like these to birth records and a longstanding practice of officially associating a family line with a local Buddhist temple or Shinto shrine. Add to the mix that the Japanese implemented Confucianism into their social order during the warrior period in the 1400-1500s, and it all gets a bit fuzzy.
