Cape Winelands, South Africa

The Cape Winelands is a region of the Western Cape Province of South Africa. It is the largest wine producing region in South Africa and is divided into six main wine regions, each offering its own unique wine route. We drove through parts of three of the regions: Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl. Stellenbosch, South Africa’s second oldest town after Cape Town, was founded in 1679 during the period of control by the Dutch East India Company. The name Stellenbosch (‘Van Der Stel’s forest’) was given to the site of Governor Simon van der Stel’s camp after he was captivated by […]

We Love Cape Town!

We’ve been so delighted to return to the many wonders of Cape Town. Along with Sydney and Paris, it ranks as a favorite city of ours. Mountains, ocean, beaches, and vineyards; fascinating history and cosmopolitan, happening vibe … we highly recommend this fabulous destination to anyone. Oh, and $1US buys almost 15 South African Rand, making it so affordable just now! Our besties, Will and Brandy Taylor, owners of Khashana Adventure Travel, will be basing out of Cape Town for much of the next year. Will’s mom, Val, lives on Woodbridge Island, just minutes from downtown Cape Town. To be […]

Fairlawn’s Boutique Hotel and Spa, Johannesburg

Our first impression of Fairlawn’s was that it was a nice hotel, like a good book with slightly worn but obviously well-loved cover. But we soon came to experience that this is a really special place, and to appreciate and luxuriate in the ‘story’ of this lovely, stately and relaxing sanctuary. Formerly the private estate of the Oppenheimer family, then the private home of now-owners John and Anna Thacker, this 39 room/suite boutique hotel has a serene and calming ambiance that was the perfect gateway night to our East African adventure. We stayed in the Nelson Mandela room and it […]

A first (and a funny) in the Cape Town airport

So, we’ve all seen baggage handlers or porters in the airports, and in Africa, they are ubiquitous. Having quite a few bags between us due to our 3 week Africa trip, plus Kilimanjaro climb, we and the Taylors decided to use the services of a porter in the Cape Town airport. As he’s wheeling our bags through the terminal, he’s talking to us, out of the side of his mouth, in a hushed manner. “You know… the limit for bags, is one per person (we had six for four of us). I miiiiiight (sideways glance and an even more hushed […]

Rugby and Sunset on Woodbridge Island, Cape Town, South Africa

We had such a fantastic stay with Mum Taylor on Woodbridge Island, with fantastic views of and access to Cape Town. We were completely spoilt by home cooking and lovely hospitality (we were like kids bringing our laundry home from college!!), and we got to experience the &*$^#($^&# – French-officiated rugby match between the Springboks and the All Blacks… including watching Mum climb up and over the coffee table to escape the living room couch (where she was blocked in) and the deplorable spectacle playing out on the TV. We are sure that Mum’s expletives were being echoed in unison […]
