A Week on the GR10: Hendaye to Auberge Logibar

We spent a little over a week on the GR10 from Hendaye to Logibar. The hiking was varied and gorgeous, and very up and down. Now we see why the trail, if stretched out straight, would be almost twice as long as the straight-line distance it covers. It is purposeful in its quest for spectacular vistas from the highest point nearby (and NOT from the roads that so temptingly skirt around the mountain instead of up and over). As we got further and higher into the more remote regions towards the 7th and 8th days, the accommodations became more, um, […]

Hiking the Foothills of the Himalayas – The Annapurnas

Hiking in the foothills of the Himalayas was on Mark’s bucket when I met him 14 years ago, before a bucket list was a thing. Sometimes a long anticipation of such a thing can end in disappointment once realized. Not so with hiking in the foothills of the section of the Himalayas called the Annapurnas. Truly some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Our flight west from Kathmandu to Pokhara  (100 miles) shadowed the Himalayan Range on its south face. We flew along at 10,000 feet with haze filling the sky from a few thousand feet below us […]

Hiking Around Mt Fuji with Mountain Trek

We’ve spent the past week in the company of 6 other intrepid trekkers hiking around Mt Fuji with Mountain Trek guides Ted Taylor and Kirkland Shave. Mountain Trek is a hiking and health spa retreat just outside of Nelson, British Columbia where we’ve enjoyed some fantastic hiking in the past. Each year, Mountain Trek leads an international adventure trek. This year’s trek dovetailed nicely with the rest of our Asia adventure, so we joined in. The trek was timed specifically for the best chance of seeing the Sakura (cherry blossoms) and wow, did they get it right! We have experienced […]

Gorillas in the Mist-y Impenetrable Forest

“Last but not least” is a definite understatement for the final leg of our East African Adventure….trekking to see mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. Besides our summit of Kilimanjaro, this was our favorite “bucket list tick” of the trip. It was both thrilling and moving to find and observe these gentle giants in their incredibly lush, remote environment. Mountain gorillas are shy and peaceful animals, and the families that we had the privilege of watching interact with each other had been habituated to humans by daily visits over a period of years. There are only 880 mountain gorillas […]
