Africa

Our adventures around Africa, including The Great Migration, Kilimanjaro, Kenya, Cape Town, South Africa, Tanzania, and of course the mountain gorillas of Uganda.

Pungwe Safari Camp and Nyaleti Lodge

Our 6th trip to Africa will see several new countries for us (Mozambique, Egypt and Morocco, plus Jordan – in Asia, not in Africa) but we started with a trip to Cape Town to visit our godson, Rhys. Oh, and his parents – Will and Brandy Taylor too, haha. Of course no trip to Africa with Will and Brandy would be complete without a bush experience … it is so special to experience Africa with the experts #khashanatravel!! Pungwe Safari…

Around The World in 4 Months and a Day

After a long absence from traveling (and thus blogging) due to some pesky knee surgery issues for Mark, we’ve embarked on our longest trip ever… 4 months and a day. We left Dallas on January 14, and ‘holding thumbs’ that all goes well, we will return on May 15. The first and last legs of our trip are to Whistler, British Columbia, Canada (about 70 miles north of Vancouver) where we are building a home. This is our 3rd OneWorld…

Out of Africa Lives on at Angama Mara

Our final stop was Angama Mara, a very special new safari lodge created and operated by Steve & Nicky Fitzgerald, legends in the luxury safari lodge industry, and good friends of our good friends, Will and Brandy Taylor (Khashana Adventure Travel). We’d been following closely the development of this dream – the beauty and history of the Angama Mara site drew visionaries Steve and Nicky out of retirement  – and we felt like we were coming to a friend’s home by the…

Fishing in the Seychelles

After a 36 hour delay, we finally got a weather clearance to fly from Mahé to Assumption Island. Tropical Cyclone Fantala had been as strong as any storm on record in the Indian Ocean, but the news from Pangaea – our home for the next 4 days – was ‘blue skies, and the fishing is heavenly.’ We had the very good fortune to be hosted on the 191 foot fishing and expedition yacht, Pangaea, for a few days. Pangaea’s, and…

Angama Mara Safari

To close out our ‘April in Africa’ series, we’ll leave you with a photographic replay of our incredible safari game drives in the Maasai Mara. Before the trip, we wondered how another safari could possibly live up to our previous amazing experiences (all arranged and curated by Khashana Adventure Travel). We also didn’t quite know what to expect since we were there in the ‘rainy’ season. As far as the season, we will never shy away from rainy season again… everything was green…

Bonzour from the Seychelles

Part 3 of our April in Africa trip: the Seychelles, an archipelago of 115 islands just south of the equator, east of Africa, and ‘a thousand miles from anywhere,’ as the tourist board slogan reminds visitors. The inner granite islands were created from a splinter of India when it tore away from Africa over 650 million years ago and were subsequently protected from the outside world by a thousand mile moat of ocean. The main islands have only been settled…

Cape Winelands, South Africa

The Cape Winelands is a region of the Western Cape Province of South Africa. It is the largest wine producing region in South Africa and is divided into six main wine regions, each offering its own unique wine route. We drove through parts of three of the regions: Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl. Stellenbosch, South Africa’s second oldest town after Cape Town, was founded in 1679 during the period of control by the Dutch East India Company. The name Stellenbosch (‘Van…

We Love Cape Town!

We’ve been so delighted to return to the many wonders of Cape Town. Along with Sydney and Paris, it ranks as a favorite city of ours. Mountains, ocean, beaches, and vineyards; fascinating history and cosmopolitan, happening vibe … we highly recommend this fabulous destination to anyone. Oh, and $1US buys almost 15 South African Rand, making it so affordable just now! Our besties, Will and Brandy Taylor, owners of Khashana Adventure Travel, will be basing out of Cape Town for…

The Dunes of Namibia

We’re spending April in Africa, our 3rd visit to the continent. We’re excited to visit 3 places we haven’t been before – Namibia, the Seychelles and Angama Mara lodge in Kenya –  plus spend some more time exploring Cape Town. We flew Qatar Airlines for the first time, with a connection through the capital city Doha. We were quite impressed with the airline, the airport lounge in Doha – great shower facilities, surprisingly good Indian/Middle Eastern cuisine in the restaurant,…
