Day #06: Rain, Rain, Go Away

Guten Tag … Willkommen to Germany! Today marked the beginning of our 11-day journey across Germany. The arrows below show stats for the ride as designed; we ended up riding only 30 miles, which is reflected in our total mileage.

Orscholz to Meisenheim

DAY #06 of 35   France   335 miles total

Today was supposed to be our first full day of great cycling in Germany. Unfortunately, not only did the weather dawn cloudy with lots of rain in the forecast, but Shauna’s sore throat had reached a more critical stage. Still, we thought we’d give it a shot, and headed east from Orscholz.

We dressed in what rain gear we had (we didn’t have booties or leg warmers,
but had decided before the trip that if the weather were that extreme, we’d pass on the riding,)

The first town out, Mettlach, and we still weren’t wet. So far so good.

The rain caught up to us though and we were wet and chilly at the coffee break 21 miles in at Wadern. While we had a coffee, things looked to improve, so we thought we’d keep trucking and off we went. In the next several miles, we intermittently had proper downpours, steady rains and drizzles.

Throwing in the Towel

Soaked, cold, and with a raw throat getting more sore by the minute, we decided to ‘cry uncle’. A testament to the service provided by Ride and Seek, we were picked up shortly after we warmed up with a cappuccino.

Not so obvious from the photo but we are drenched and cold… had to cry uncle for today.. forecast is for rain all day. 🤷‍♀️

We stopped at a German Backerei to warm up and wait for the support van to pick us up.
We had to pass on the German goodies since we only rode 30 miles today.

Shauna’s lunch instead…

The crew has to keep working no matter the weather.
Colette has lunch ready in the back of the van, but we’re not going out there… it’s wet!

Colette is a jack of all trades.
The van wouldn’t start for a few hours over lunch break, but she eventually got it going with her magic touch.
Even though just over half the riders opted out, we were still feeling a little wimpy.
Next time we will have rain booties and rain pants… FOMO was in full swing.

Mike of course didn’t even notice the rain and made it to our hotel, Meisenheimer Hof, looking fresh as a daisy.

The main building of the hotel was an inn since at least 1699.
Surrounding homes were acquired for additional rooms, so ours was a bit of trek.
Good thing Shauna travels with her porter!

The hotel brought us bone broth that had been cooking for 3 days…. guaranteed to heal sore throats.
Here’s hoping it works by tomorrow.
